Paperwork and Veterinary Requirements

It’s best to have Transcontinental Pet Movers or an equally qualified IPATA agent help guide and plan your pet’s pre-move preparations. For now, the following information serves as a guide in order to prepare your pet to enter the Bahamas.

Quarantine

Quarantine may be required depending on how you conduct your pet’s health and veterinary requirements.

Health/Veterinary Requirements

Requires 2-3 months of preparation to enter without quarantine.

Microchip

Always recommended for Pet Travel

  • Dogs and cats should be identifiable by microchip. The microchip should be ISO compliant and 15 digits long.

Vaccinations

The latest vaccination must be valid at time of export.

  • Dogs and Cats Rabies:
    • 1 year Rabies vaccinations done within 1 year but not less than 1 month from import.
    • Or 3 year Rabies vaccination done within 34 months but not less than 1 month from import.
  • Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DHLPP) and Coronavirus.
  • Cats: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia (FVRCP).

Paperwork Requirements

Processed about 4 weeks prior to departure.

Import Permit / Dog Permit

Apply at least 4 weeks prior to departure. Valid for 1 year

Health Examination for Health Certificate

Must be conducted within 48 hours of travel

  • At this point in your pet’s move, one of our pet shipping specialists will pre-complete the correct health certificate and email it to your veterinarian for signature at the physical appointment. We provide all documents and are available to answer any questions and troubleshoot issues that may arise.

Grand Bahama International Airport is the international airport serving Freeport, Bahamas for pets to arrive.

Bahamas Dog Import Restricted Breeds & Quarantine

The Bahamas restricts the importation of certain dog breeds – even temporarily by visitors whether arriving by commercial airline, private boat, private airplane or any other method.

The following dog breeds are restricted/banned from importation into The Bahamas:

  • Pit Bull
  • Presa Canario
  • Cane Corso
  • American Bully
  • Staffordshire Terrier
  • Dogo Argentiono

Any mixed breed dogs that are mixed with these breeds are also restricted, so a pit bull mix is also restricted from importation.

The following cat breeds and their mixes are restricted as well:

  • Savannah Cat
  • Bengal Cat
  • Chausie
